The corporate media, and white folks in general, view the process as an inevitability – a kind of crude justice – not because they have rejected the principle of self-government, but because Detroit is overwhelmingly Black, and Blacks have always been the exception to the American rule. In fact, all of the Black population centers of Michigan have been divested of the right to govern themselves.

There has been no national outpouring of solidarity with Michigan’s Blacks over the loss of their citizenship rights, which can only mean that there exists an effective white consensus that African Americans are not fully deserving of those rights. Uncontrolled concentrations of Blacks are seen as pathological, by definition.

The same race-based exception was made to public education, for Blacks. In New Jersey and localities across the country, public schools in largely Black areas have for decades been under state control, denying Black parents any effective voice in their children’s education. By and large, white suburbanites supported the state in making Blacks an exception to the general American rule on local control over education. It is a right Blacks are not thought to be qualified to exercise.

Breaking: Hung jury in case of Detroit police officer accused in 7-year-old Aiyana Jones shooting - The jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict in the case of Detroit Police officer Joseph Weekley who was accused in the death of 7-year-old Aiyana Jones.

Earlier Tuesday, the jury told the court they were having trouble reaching a verdict in the case and the judge ordered them to continue deliberations.

Hours later the court announced that there was a hung jury.

Weekley was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in the death of 7-year-old Aiyana Jones during a raid on her family’s home on May 16, 2010. Aiyana was shot during the raid, which was caught on tape by crews filming for the reality show “The First 48.”

Aiyana’s family has endured continued harassment from the Detroit PD, including when police in riot gear invaded the family’s new home after her death.

Family members said they were struck, shoved and called racist and sexist names as police officers, some in plainclothes, forced their way into the home on Detroit’s far east side.

Five children were there at the time, including a one-month old baby, a two-year-old toddler, and a five-year old.

“I was just sitting here watching my grandson,” Mertilla Jones, Aiyana’s paternal grandmother said. “Four cop cars pulled up and then they were coming from all over. They tried to grab Bobbie (Aiyana’s cousin), but he came in the house and me and Lakiya and R. J. [Rafael Jones] went out on the porch. The Black cop hit me in the mouth with a flashlight, and pushed and shoved me.”

I learned to love math in elementary school through a game called ‘math 24’ it’s basically these cards that have four numbers on them, you can use each number once using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. As you advanced the numbers would progress from natural to integer to rational to algebraic to complex. I forgot all about it until an old friend brought up that he was using it to teach kids he was tutoring.

If you’re interested you can play the game here (I’m sure there are more sites but that’s the first one I found). It’s fun practice for math and you can play against people.

It’s not at all surprising that MSNBC in general and Rachel Maddow in particular would mischaracterize the Iranian (or the Chinese or the Russian or the Syrian…) regime. GE wants to build more weapons.

So this guy is from a right wing think tank, and it shows.

He completely ignored the lending side/money supply side of the economy. He’s basically describing something that QE could do in a healthy economy (i.e., shift investors away from bonds towards stocks and other more direct capital investments), but isn’t the pressing goal.

The actual goal of QE is twofold. First, it’s to increase the excess reserves that banks have to lend out. By making banks more liquid, this increases the likelihood that banks will lend money instead of hoarding it in anticipation of a bank run. Secondly, it keeps interest rates low (both through the mechanism captain market described and also through an increase in the money supply). This incentivizes borrowers to borrow money to finance the purchase of consumer durables (cars, homes, etc.) as well as capital equipment (machinery, tractors, etc.).

However, QE is very limited in its effectiveness. Without an economy to back it up (goods and services available for purchase on loans, reasonable prospects for starting or expanding business, consumer financial security, etc.) QE can only stop things from getting worse. That QE hasn’t solved anything isn’t very surprising, because you can’t build an economy on money alone.

That’s what fiscal policy is for.
